James Yuill makes eARs happy

Dene was confused by science
This is tremendous news, James Yuill, who released his debut album ‘Turning Down Water for Air’ back in 2008, has given it the remix treatment, meaning a remix album and an excuse for me to blog about one of my favourite singles of the year, ‘No Surprise’.
I first heard of James a few years ago when I was living in North London, my then neighbour, Joel, who runs eARmusic, told me it’d be a crime not to check him out, so I did, and Joel wasn’t wrong. He’s incredible.
The original album version is a beautiful, warm and catchy pop song with wooden xylophones and touching lyrics. The Earth mix is a stripped down version, ‘acoustic’ if you will with some brilliantly subtle guitar work, whilst at the other end of the spectrum the fire version is full on electronica, a dirty bass and some piano’s (I am loving Piano’s at the moment for some reason) which I’m sure my tinny headphones don’t do justice. Anyway, there’s literally a version now for all occasions, well, there is if you want to drop in The Operators remix, a bit more, dare I say, trance-y, which I’ve included as well. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the elusive Peter Dragontail had a go at a remix too, which is a bit different to the others, minimal is the wrong word, laid back electronica is probably a better word.
So, take a listen, and then go out and buy his album, it’d be a crime not to.
