What the hell happened to…

Tom Vek

So with December and the new year fast approaching (yes, it’s now November, how the fuck did that happen?) We at WANARB, like many of you, have been looking back at the last ten years and coming to the realisation that a lot can, and has happened to the musical landscape in ten years. So with that, comes a post on an artist that many of you may have forgotten about, seeing as he’s only ever released one album, and that was way back in 2005.

First though, it’s our great pleasure to announce that we’re planning big things for the end of the decade – watch this space kids…

Anyways – the artist in question isn’t My Vitriol, who seem to toy with comebacks and have stated that their follow up to 2000’s ‘Finelines’ is the indie equivalent of Chinese Democracy. No, I’m talking about a man from Essex who wrote and recorded his debut album in his bedroom, someone who hasn’t said anything about a second album, someone who’s just disappeared – someone called Tom Vek. He’s the man who has had “continues to work on the follow up to 2005 debut “We Have Sound“” posted on the front page of his website and his MySpace for over two years.

Tom Vek 2 I loved 2005’s “We Have Sound”, it was an incredible album. In the days before The Killers and The Bravery made electronic indie music available and accessible to the masses, Tom Vek’s album managed to merge indie and electronica in a way that felt fresh, new and exciting.

It wasn’t a bad seller either, whilst many debut albums that come out by individual artists fail to make an impact on the music charts, Tom’s album was commercially successful with some people (idiots) calling him “the new Beck”. He was remixed by the man of the hour Paul Epworth (aka Phones) and his video’s were all over MTV. Then, poof! Just as quickly as he’d appeared, he disappeared. The three things I am hanging onto at this moment in time seem tame, fragile and weak things to hold on to, but necessary to keep the dream of a second album (one that won’t be shit) alive. The three things are;

1)       His website says he’s working on a second album

  • They wouldn’t lie to loyal fans who have been waiting nearly five years for a second album would they?

2)       Emmy the Great mentioned on a DiS forum that she has seen Tom in a studio working on some songs.

  • Yes, this was well over 18months ago, but still, he was spotted in a recording studio, meaning point 1 is certainly true, and a new album may come out sometime…

3)       January 2009, B-Sides album with remixes appear on the internet

  • Giving us hope that he’s keeping us all sweet and new material is coming soon

So, I’m sad, three rather meaningless things that give me hope there’ll be a second album, but while I wait, I think you should check out a couple of tracks I’ve posted below and remember the good times from 2005 and a B-Side that surfaced over ten months ago *sobs*

Tom Vek – I aint saying my goodbyes

Tom Vek – Nothing but green lights

Tom Vek One horse race

I heart Tom Vek, i still listen to we have sound at least once week (how sad of me) but what ev’s I’d go as far to say it’s one of my favorite albums ever!

  2. Paul Epworth killed off ‘phones’ exactly 1 year ago today. ‘well coinci-mental’

  3. Hi,

Just giving a clarification of that b-sides & remixes “album”: it’s not an official Tom Vek release. It’s pretty much all the b-sides from the album (Buick Riviera, Summer Fall, Don’t Jump, Things Are Here To Stay, Blessing In Disguise, Music Television, One Horse Race), a Cable cover, the collaboration he did with Yourcodenameis:milo, and all the released remixes. There’s nothing new in there. The artwork for the so-called “release” is actually the cover of the 7″ and 12″ for Nothing But Green Lights.
