NOT NEW YEARS EVE YET!

Posted in Club Night, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , on December 29, 2009 by Doombot

Hi all! We trust the festive jollities of the season have treated you well? An increased resilience to alcohol may have developed, you should now be fatter and possibly own more things.

We thought we’d let you know about a party that is very close to our collective heart. Tonight it’s DURRR‘s infamous NOT NYE PARTY, which should be a phenomenal affair. The line-up speaks for itself really (oh, did we mention Erol Alkan AND Rory Phillips are playing? ♥ ♥ ♥).

Only when The End shut it’s doors did I realise how spoilt I was by attending a night of this callibre weekly. Now their sporadic events are truly to be cherished… and attended!

I’m not an MC, but I’d like to kiss Uffie

Posted in anthem, electro, We are not a rock band with tags , , on December 28, 2009 by Montagano

Hello! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are gearing up for a booming new year! We certainly are – expect to find most of the team down at Bugged Out! at various points of new years day, some rested, others desperately trying to power through to the bitter end. Ouch.

Anyhoo – as Christmas is over (bar the dodgy Walt Disney films), I think we should get back to the real world and fatten you guys up with some serious tunage. My pal sent me this new track by Anna-Catherine Hartley, AKA Uffie, a week or so before Christmas and it has been on repeat on my ipod ever since. It was single-handedly the theme tune to my Christmas shopping bonanza. Fucking love it.

Her new single, ‘MC’s Can Kiss’ is due for release in February 2010 and is produced by none other than the French legend and demi-god Mr Oizo. It’s full of his typical quirky beats and rythms that makes his music so fun to listen to. It’s been a while since we posted anything by Oizo here on WANARB – if you go back to spring/summer last year you’ll see tons of his tunes littered across our pages. Uffie spits her usual self-gratifying lyrics – not that it’s a bad thing, she is probably talking the truth after all. Personally, I think this is her best work yet.

Play it LOUD!

And as I’m still in the mood for giving (and not just to Uffie), here’s her CLASSIC track – Ready To Uff – that she made with Feadz. BIG

P.S. If this is my last blog of 2009, I’d like to say a big thank you for reading our ramblings over the last 10 months or so – we love you all. Big things to come from WANARB in 2010… Stay tuned.

Merry Christmas Bitches!

Seeing as everyone’s been getting all festive on the blog this last week or so, I thought it was about time I got in on the act. My choice of Christmas song is ‘Happy Holidays you Bastard’ by Blink 182 from their 2001 album ‘Take off your pants and Jacket’. It’s loud, offensive, immature and makes me feel young again (which is always a bonus). Have a great Christmas and I’ll be back in the new year (if not before).

Introducing: Sebastian Lind

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , on December 24, 2009 by AK47

I meant to blog about Sebastian Lind a while back, but just never got around to finishing the post off. When I decided that today would be a good day to finish it and get it posted, I thought it would be best to check if he had any new tracks that I could include, so onto Google I go, and type in ‘Sebastian Lind’. What a surprise that this post was #2, “Wow,” I thought “I just MUST get this new post up about him, if we’re 2nd on Google when you type in his name, surely we’re duty bound to actually feature something on him”. So here we go, a Sebastian Lind post for you.

Sadly, there are no new tracks to write about and post, there are just the two that I came across back in early November. I’ve scoured his MySpace, and apart from it being in Danish, I can’t really tell anything about him except he’s ‘Elektronisk pop-rock med et tvist af singasongwriter’ and he’s only got 344 friends.
I also believe that he’s releasing a single ‘Stop these Feet’ which you can listen to on his MySpace.

It’s nice music, not exactly Top of the Pops music (which is a good thing when it looks like that’s the route Island want Erik Hassle to follow), it’s much more heartfelt, soulful, minimalist electronica and guitars. Like with Trophy Boyfriend, they’re solid songs with a lot of promise and being signed to a smaller label, they may not have the marketing clout behind them, but they should develop and hold onto their own artistic integrity.

So the tracks, ‘Stay’ which is a Janus Dyg remix, who’s a Danish producer, who’s also in a band called Niepoort, who just so happen to sound absolutely gorgeous and I will most certainly bring you something on them when I get the time. Check out their MySpace to see what I mean. Beautiful.

Flairs!

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on December 23, 2009 by AK47

‘I make love longer than Prince’, is a claim Flairs frontman Lionel Flair repeats continuously on their single ‘Better than Prince’, which is pure awesome. But I’m not here to talk about that, oh no. I’m here for the Alex Gopher remix of Truckers Delight.

Curious, that is all that can be used to describe this remix, it’s a bit short, it’s a bit dirty, it’s a bit synth and its a bit 8-Bit

I like it, but am unsure exactly where I’d like to hear it, you can’t stomp one out, wobble all over the place, groove or shout “Yes!” at intermittent intervals during its 3:35 timeline.

I’d say it’s an interesting track, and you should give it a listen, some pieces hark back to old house, others to rolling bass of modern electro and horns, horns a plenty, fog horns at that. Great. On multiple listens, I think you could most certainly do the Truck Horn manoeuvre that Knockturnal has perfected over the years, and that, my friends, is reason enough for it to be played out.

Gremlins ♥ Christmas!

Posted in We are not a rock band on December 22, 2009 by ksimsek

All I want for Christmas this year is a cuddly Gremlin. My mother has declared that Father Christmas is going to think that it’s absurd that a 26 year old woman wants a cuddly toy and has warned me it is highly unlikely he will fullfill my wish. Well, d’you know what, if he doesn’t bring me a Gremlin I’m gonna know he isn’t real as I’ve been really good.

Anyway, it’s Christmas! Let’s get festive with the Gremlins!

You may remember that AK47 blogged a cover version of this track the other day. Well I’m a card holding member of the ‘anti covers brigade’ and am 100% backing the epic Phil Spector 1963 original as being the finest Christmas tune around. Phil Spector of course being one of the most famed record producers of the 60s/70s – and murderer with mental hair. His trial was a total farce, check out some of the best quotes here including, ““I’ve got machine guns and I know where you live.”

“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is sung by Darlene Love and is taken from the festive album A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector. Let’s be honest, they really don’t make Christmas tunes like this any more!

Christmas Duets

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , on December 22, 2009 by AK47

I blame my illness for missing out on a few Christmas posts. A few days of work and a weekend of non drinking will do that to a man. So today, instead of one duet, to make up for yesterday, I will bring you two!

My third favourite Chrismas duet, following on from Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone a few days past, I bring you Bing Crosbie and David Bowie

Bing Crosbie + David Bowie Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy

Par-um-pa-pum-pum indeed.

So onto my favourite, which is so good, Hollyoaks did an opening scene to it a few days ago (they also did one to ‘Mew – She Came Home for Christmas’), which is

The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl Fairytale of New York

nb. Note that both Bing Crosbie and Kirsty MacColl are sadly no longer with us, whilst Bowie and MacGowan are still here. Leading to both duets only having one singer currently still alive, this is one of the reasons why Elton John and Kiki Dee weren’t allowed in this post, they’re both still alive.

Silly Sunday! NES-fest

Posted in Silly Sundays, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , on December 21, 2009 by Montagano

Whatever happened to Silly Sundays?

I got lame, that’s what. The reasons behind the sudden disappearance of the aforementioned feature isn’t through lack of material – on the contrary – there’s shit loads of stuff we could use. It’s the fact I chose a fucking Sunday to do a weekly post! LONG

Anyway, this week we have some bad boy 8-bit computer game tunage, all from games I used to own on the NES as a kid. Let the memories come a-flooding…

First up – the Mega Man 2 theme tune (not to be mistaken for Mega Man of So Solid Crew fame kids). Now that was a game… For those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to encounter a Mega Man game, it was basically some bionic dude wandering around shooting stuff. If I’m honest (which I am) I can’t actually remember much about it. Couldn’t you change colours and get different powers, like guns and saws and stuff? Please someone jog my memory – I would like to reminisce. The tune ‘drops’ big time around the 40 second mark. You need to hear it. 8-bit tear out music.

Mega Man 2 – Theme tune

Next up – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – or I should say Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles, as it was called  here in the UK. Yes that’s right – the word ‘Ninja’ was banned because it was deemed too violent. How pathetic. Anyway – crap game, great tune. I defy you not to have it stuck in your head after listening to it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Finally – The Legend of Zelda. Wow. Legendary game, legendary tune. This tune used to bring a tear to my eye.

A Sufjan Christmas

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , on December 20, 2009 by AK47

Sufjan Stevens is awesome. I’m pretty sure he’d be the nicest man you’d ever meet too. What makes him even more awesome isn’t just his intention to write an album for each one of the 50 American states,  it’s his Christmas Collections. He’s been writing and recording original Christmas songs for his friends and family for years, which led to him releasing these as a collection of  EPs back in 2006. They contained 5 CD’s/Vinyls in beautiful packaging, with EP sleeves having the words and chords to sing and play along with the songs.

Today, I’ve got a couple of tracks for you, all I need to say is “Merry Christmas”.

Less Bon, more Jovie with Zooey

Posted in Uncategorized, We are not a rock band with tags , , on December 18, 2009 by AK47

From husband yesterday, today I move to Wife. That’s right, from that guy (from Death Cab for Cutie) to She (from She & Him). It’s a nice little segway enabling me to include two people who I love, and, (after Matt Zaller telling me that she’s actually as amazing in real life as you’d hope she would be) who I’d probably kill to meet. It’s also great, because I get to include two awesome clips from Elf and Matt’s interview with her!

Not only is Elf one of the most hilarious Christmas films ever, it’s also responsible for a lovely Christmas song from Zooey Deschanel (who played Jovie in the film) and Leon Redbone (who played Leon the Snowman).

Zooey Deschanel & Leon Redbone – Baby It’s Cold Outside

I’ll also throw in a few YouTube clips after the jump which’ll make you wish you’d watched Elf at the weekend and Matt’s interview with Zooey. All I can say is that I want to open a pie shop with her.
