I’ve been waiting to say these words for many years now.  OXIDE AND NEUTRINO ARE BACK! And they’re performing LIVE at hot new bar The Alibi on May 1st! THRICE AS NICE is a new night from the team over at The Muso’s Guide, and will also feature Ant or Dec and Rough Trade DJs. It’s on from 8pm-3am and is free to get in.

Need a reminder about how sick this night is gonna be? How can you forget this – they sampled  Casualty FFS!

Wish you were here…

It’s a strange couple of weeks for W.A.N.A.R.B. Pretty much all of us are off on holiday somewhere, meaning that all is going to be quiet on the blog front in the next week or two…

Knockturnal and myself are currently in Miami at the Winter Music Conference, where we shall stay until Tuesday. After this, we have a week in New York (excited!!!). AK47 is currently in Oz, Bert is in SXSW with his band, Kara Simsek is off Snowbombing and Maxiwinnipeg will be hitch hiking to Morrocco!! Lucky us.

We had a shit load of interviews lined up with DJ’s, but so far all have them have gone TOTALLY out of the window. Cancellations, DJ’s running late, us partying our asses off and me losing my iPhone (gutted) are to blame. Fear not though – it is our mission to bring amazing stuff to you by the time we return to the UK!

One thing that is guaranteed, is that we’re already looking forward to our return next year. This place is unreal.

Muchos love – wish you were all here

xx

Herve releases ZOMBIES

Posted in remix/cover, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , on March 26, 2010 by ksimsek

Before I start let me quickly point out that the guy in the picture isn’t Herve, it’s a guy called ‘Zombie DJ Matt’ who I found on here. If you want to know what it’s like to be a young married Mormon (pretty fun by the looks of it!) then check it out.  BUT if you want to hear a sweet remix of Herve’s soon to drop (well April 26th) single then forget that and read on.

You made the right choice, mixes beat matrimony EVERY time.

Zombies is out at the end of April on Herve’s Cheap Thrills label.  It’s taken from his forthcoming Ghetto Bass 2 mix album and the single package also features a new track ‘Hot! Drums Attack’ on the b-side. There’s also remixes from the newest member of the Cheap Thrills family, Franzy Scanner – here’s one of ‘em.

Herve – Zombies (Franzy Scanner Graveyard Remix) – taken down upon request of artist

We LOVE Mustard Pimp and we LOVE birthdays, so guess what, we LOVE this birthday mixtape they’ve released to mark turning 2 years old!

We’ve featured loads of their mixes on here, including the impressive 12 hour mixtape,  epic 24 hour Jack Bauer mixtape, the Kentucky Fried Pigeon mixtape and of course our favourite mash-up duo Cherry Kiwi.  And their Fresh Prince remix.

There’ll be another mix next month, but in the meantime they are:

WANARB @ SXSW (Part 3)

Good Morning from Texas!

What an insane but brilliant few days! Last night I was on a sleeper bus with 50 people singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs, 6 hours previous I was setting up a gig in a shop and the night before that I was sorting a show at a house party which was like the film Return to the Valley of the Dolls. I’ve become the All American Consumer and bought a bunch of crap (state shaped belt buckle anyone?!) but I feel like rooting through thrift stores is a good way to spend time especially when teaming it with a bit of Texas BBQ!

So onto the music … in the past couple of days I saw a very tight and theatrical The Good, The Bad at the Danish party on 6th Street who were closely followed by The Kissaway Trail. The venue was a tiny outside marquee and there were only 50 or so people there. Crystal Fighters played a couple of shows at the luxurious Phoenix and the massive Pure Volume yesterday …. interview coming soon! I saw MEN who ripped it up. She Wants Revenge are pretty amazing live, pretty popular in America and they had one of the better stages at the usually gay ‘Rusty Spurs‘ venue. The Scissor Sisters would have been but their vocal mics were too low. That outside stage at Stubbs (one of Austin’s premier venues) was cool – about 2000 people there and some nice stage tricks (lighting, costume changes etc.) Muse played there the night before, but much like The XX at Mohawks, the place was packed to the rafters.

I have never been in a town with as many venues as this. People’s houses and shops become venues and even usually there are about 50 music venues + all the tents at SXSW. Austin is known as ‘The Home of Live Music’ – I can totally see why. I might get another chance to post whilst I’m here but if not, i’ll get back with a photo, video and interview roundup >>>

2007 was a vintage year – as proved by Radioclit

Posted in mix, We are not a rock band with tags , , on March 19, 2010 by ksimsek

‘This night at the Big Chill House tonight looks good,’ I thought. I decided to investigate. I heard this mix by Greena and thought it was totally lame so decided to dig out something better by headliners Radioclit … and look what I found!

This is from all the way back in 2007 (in my opinion the best year for dance music due to little gems like this, yes I know I have lost all credibility I may have ever grasped like a crab holding on to a strand of seaweed in a shallow stinking pool) and the perfect tonic to a dull Friday afternoon.

New DJ Zinc remix

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , on March 19, 2010 by Montagano

So – Paul Weller is releasing a new tune – but more importantly, DJ Zinc has done a new crack house remix of it! It landed in our inbox last week so I thought we’d share it with you, our lovely readers… As we have come to expect from the Zincster of late, it has all the trademark whaamping bass that you would expect to hear at some scuzzy bassline-house night up in Birmingham.

Fact of the day – apparently ‘Blunt Edge’ (or Wile Out as it’s now called with the addition of Ms. Dynamite) is a pretty big tune up in Brum at the moment. We posted it exactly a year ago today! (Back in the early days when there wasn’t even a glimpse of format/house style). Take a look here.

Paul Weller - Wake up the nation (DJ Zinc mix)

I chucked in a Leo Zero remix for good measure too.

The Electro Wars – The Blog House Revolution

Posted in electro, Trailer, Video, We are not a rock band with tags , , on March 19, 2010 by sarahkarpward

Before I start this post, I’d first like to introduce myself.  My name is Sarah Karp Ward or just SKW.  I’d describe myself as a Fashion Designer by day, music enthusiast by night, bacon lover, secret softy, kitty cat obsessed, Twitter addict and an oversocial twenty something living in New York City.

Those who love electronic music are familiar with the term BLOG HOUSE and often (and for good reason) make fun of it. I am guilty of being a fan of the “genre” and I can’t get enough of all the remix love I find on Hype Machine. I have noticed that in comparison to year’s past, electro DJs/producers are getting more recognization and bigger and better parties at WMC. I completely believe that this blog house revolution has a lot to do with this. I came across this interesting documentary called The Electro Wars that will be debuted at WMC and I will be there for the third year in a row and really I want to try to catch it. The documentary interviews DJ, producers and musicians about this whole electro and blog house revolution. It used to be that good quality music could only be produced on expensive equipment but now with the new technologies, it is literally produced in people’s bedrooms. The question asked is “how has the music industry been affected by this and how will they be affected by this in the future?”

Kavinsky + Daft Punk + Sebastian + CSS = massive win

Posted in electro, Electronica, New Music, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on March 18, 2010 by Montagano

So, those of you who read my last post know that I’m having a mini (potentially enormous) French renaissance right now – and these bad boys are no exception. In terms of calibre, I would be surprised if there’s another song with this kind of star studded line-up released this year. Kavinsky (Record Makers) dreamed it up, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk omg omg omg!!) produced it, Sebastian (Ed Banger) mixed it and Lovefoxxx (CSS) provided the vocals! Wow. So surely with a line up of this magnitude it HAS to be utterly amazing? Correct. It’s sensational. It’s a low-slung, down-tempo beast of a tune, with vocals to drift off to.

At the moment you can only buy it on limited 7″ Vinyl from record maker (see links below). Go grab yourself a copy – well worth the purchase. We’re not allowed to share this but you can feast your ears nonetheless.

I’m LOVING this sound at the moment – can’t get enough of it.  Looks like our trip to Miami next week is going to have a French accent…

Kavinsky - Nightcall

Kavinsky - Pacific Coast Highway

WANARB @ SXSW (Part 2)

Posted in We are not a rock band on March 18, 2010 by bertrum

Yeehhaaaww!!

Yesterday was a great day … I met a death metal cello band from New York and The Invisible, got a lift downtown with a guy called Alvaro, his chica and their dog, caught a ride back up town at 3am with a lesbian in a pick up truck. Not to mention The Coolness playing a storming set to over 250 people, hanging out with Doll and The Kicks, lending Laurel Collective a keyboard and chatting sync deals with Asteriods Galaxy Tour‘s Manager.

If this festival could run every day of the year the world would be a better place and some of the crap that the music industry suffers would be overcome … thats quite philosophical for me at 10.30am. Maybe I should go check out some lectures today.

Visually arresting three piece The Invisible play funky bass and wall of guitar distortion plus drums and a korg synth, they are producing really fresh and unique sounds. They have been credited with a Mercury Music Prize Nomintion, but there is definitely more to them than that.

Danish band Asteroids Galaxy Tour played SXSW for the second year running and held the crowd with an energetic performance and a pretty frontwoman backed up with a 70′s disco sound and trumpets. Good times!

Artists playing today (Thursday) who have caught my eye : The Toxic Avenger, The Walkmen, MEN, The XX, Computer Club, Hot Pink Delorean and Holy Fuck. Oh and a film about bears and a talk by Feargal Sharkey could be interesting … + i will be searching for more shows to play

Catch up with the next installment of WANARB @ SXSW 2010 soon >>>
