Birthday Basement Rave

Posted in Club Night, Warehouse Party with tags , , , , , on June 20, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Birthday Basement Rave flyerThis Friday sees Dalston dive The Victory taken over for a Birthday Basement Rave extravaganza consisting of 2 floors, 3 birthday girl hosts, a wildly ecletic mix of music and a pub full of trashbag revellers. And the best bit? It’s all absolutely free. There are also apparently 2 secret acts scheduled to perform and, despite being one of the aforementioned birthday hosts, they are so secret even I don’t know who they are!

Personally what I’m most looking forward to are the DJ sets from We Are Not A Rockband’s very own Hazmat, and Potty Mouth Disco stalwart Ben Scales. These boys know how to get me dancing! So if you’re not at Glastonbury Festival and you’re kicking about East London, pop in and say a happy birthday hi.

Trouble Vision Summer Session Review

Posted in Club Night, House, Minimal with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 15, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

trouble vision sat 11 juneIt’s now my firm belief that there is no friendlier night in London than Trouble Vision. It’s so rare to go out and experience an evening where your drinks stay unspilled, your toes stay un-stomped and you don’t get barged past in the bogs. I chatted to people in the queue to get in, outside having cigarettes, at the bar and even inside the club bang next to the speaker. Literally everyone I spoke to was nice and welcoming and proper sound. The atmosphere the Trouble Vision crew create is something quite unique for London, and actually something special.

Combine this with their consistently good lineups and what you get is a loyal following of regular goers. Being a Trouble Vision virgin myself, I was totally unaware of this and, in all honesty, with it being at Corsica Studios, was expecting a pretty standard Elephant-And-Castle level of crazy attitude. So glad to be proved wrong.

The night is somewhat of a blur in all honesty. I know what I saw was really good, even if I can’t tell you exactly what tracks were played. What I can tell you about is that warm fuzzing feeling you get after a fantastic night out. What I can say is that it’s one of the best nights out I’ve had in a while. What I can do is recommend that you get down to Trouble Vision and find out for yourself how awesome it is.

If that glowing reference doesn’t satisfy you then I’d advise you to head over to Tensnake’s Official Website and signup to download his latest free mix. It’s really rather good. I’d also strongly suggest you give Lee Foss’ latest podcast a whirl.  He claims it was delivered to him by “B6 the Backwards Motion Robot” and mixed by a future version of himself at a Hot Natured Party on Saturn in the year 2082. There are so many standout tunes on this mix, from Luca C & Brigante feat Ali Love – Morals (Clockwork remix), to Slowhands – Belle Of The Ball and to the superb moment that Agoria’s remix of Inner City’s Big Fun kicks in; you can see why he’s said it was an extra-terrestrial “classics set from the early 2000’s”. Download it now for instant lushness.

The Death Set : New Video and Free Download

Posted in bands, Video, We are not a rock band with tags , , , on June 15, 2011 by Knockturnal

It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of The Death Set, in fact their latest album “Michel Poicaard” may just be my favourite release this year.  I’ve been wanting to see them live for ages so was pumped when I saw they would be playing London back in April. However, (much to my dismay) their flight over was delayed meaning the show could not go on.  To make up for it the boys kindly put on a free gig the following night but I wasn’t able to make it – MEGA SAD FACE ensued. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out they’ll be returning to London July 21st to play The Macbeth!

Anyway, the third single from the album – ‘Can You Seen Straight?’ dropped this week on Ninja Tune accompanied by a brand new video which features much galivanting around Paris and Brooklyn, along with a Jean Luc Godard inspired intro.  Check the video out below then grab yourself a copy of the Moombathon remix by Nadastrom. The new tour dates are after the jump!

Robot(s) Rock

Posted in electro, House, Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 7, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

The ModelRomanian artist The Model has teamed up with My Favourite Robot to produce such a standout track and accompanying video, that it’s kicked off some intense geek-excitement in me. Still In My Heart is this haunting ‘80s synth number that record label Crosstown Rebels has described as “a vampish feast of 80s proto-house”. Which is frankly awesome. If that description doesn’t sell it to you alone, then there’s probably something wrong with you. It’s okay though, because the video is definitely going to win you over. It somehow fits perfectly even though the retro sci-fi concept isn’t the first thing you’d imagine upon hearing the actual song.

I’ve absolutely fallen head-over-heels in love with this video. Part original Battlestar Galatica, part Voltron with a hint of Neon Genesis Evangelion and a hefty dollop of vintage Japanese monster movies. It’s worth watching a few times over, it’s that good. If the video’s not doing it for you then chances are you’re not a massive geek like me so just head over to Crosstown Rebels’ SoundCloud page to check out samples of the remixes they’ll be releasing alongside the original version.
