TONIGHT : SOCIETY (ALMOST) NEW YEAR SPECIAL w. ROBERT OWENS, DAN BEAUMONT + more

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Chicago House, Club Night, Society with tags , , , , , on December 29, 2011 by Knockturnal

Tonight is our last SOCIETY Session of the year and this one is going to bring down the walls. No excuses – no work in the morning (unless you’re really unlucky). Come and werk off that Xmas Turkey with a non-stop basement jackin’ session.

Joining ROBERT OWENS this month are the inimitable DAN BEAUMONT, who many of you will remember from our Marshall Jefferson warehouse party earlier this year (he absolutely KILLED IT) and Trailer Trash legend MIKKI MOST who will both be digging to the back of their box for Acid House Xmas Crackers. JOSH CAFFE, SOCIETY RESIDENTS and guests will keep our baubles shaking until the early hours, plus we have some very special surprises in store.

If you’ve not made it down to our parties yet, DO NOT MISS THIS ONE. Our previous events have seen the Dalston basement transformed into east London’s take on Ron Hardy’s Muzic Box, with an untouchable atmosphere and the party people jackin’ to the sounds of 80′s Chicago house ‘til the small hours. Nowhere else can you dance in a cosy basement club with Robert Owens singing and dancing along with you. This party will put your New Years Eve to shame – we promise.

THURSDAY 29TH
DECEMBER 2011 | 9:00PM – 2:30AM
DALSTON SUPERSTORE | 117 KINGSLAND ROAD, LONDON, E8 2BP

5 Most Ubiquitous Tracks Of The Year

Posted in House with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 24, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Azari & III HungryForThePower If, like me, you’ve gone home for Christmas, then chances are you’re stuck out in the countryside somewhere trying to avoid Christmas music and awaiting relatives who you know will spend the next few days mercilessly taking the piss out of you. So if you know that pain, then surely you can forgive me producing yet another of these end-of-year lists.

I’ve limited myself to only five though as I figure most people will skim mega-long lists. Over the last month there’s been poll after poll, list after list; all essentially saying the same thing. But they’re never going to say anything much ground-breaking are they? It’s just us collectively saying “yep, I really liked that, I did.” So these aren’t necessarily my five favourite tracks. These are just the five tracks it was impossible to avoid this year.

Can you keep a secret? OK – cool.

So a new little basement space has cropped up on Kingsland Road – and they’re doing a cheeky pre-launch party this Saturday (17th Dec 2011). Run by Potty Mouth promoter and long-time friend of WANARB, this 200 capacity venue will be open weekly and promises to become quite a hit on the East London scene. Expect to start hearing a lot more about it in the weeks and months to come (you heard it here first).

It’s guest list only, so please send an email to pottymouthdisco@gmail.com to confirm your attendance, or alternatively, just pipe up that you’re a reader of We Are Not a Rock Band on the door, and they’ll greet you with open arms.

VIDEO: Aquarius Heaven – Stop

Posted in Deep House, House, New Music, Video with tags , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Aquarius HeavenBerlin-based Aquarius Heaven is no stranger to a sexy tune. After moving to Paris in 2005 and hooking up legendary French act dOP, the ex-reggae and dancehall singer broke into the world of dance. His last release Can’t Buy Love, on Wolf + Lamb, was the type of track you could get obsessed over. With a low-down groove and hilariously shocking sexual lyrics, it was one of this autumn’s biggest tracks, featuring on both Visionquest’s recent Fabric 61 Mix and Art Department’s Essential Mix.

Latest track Stop is accompanied with a very very sexy video. It’s a good tune but could definitely benefit from a filthy little remix or two to give it a bit of oomph.

THIS MAN INVENTED ACID HOUSE

Posted in Acid house, Society, Warehouse Party with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 14, 2011 by Knockturnal

HUGE NEWS! For our fourth Acid House all-nighter we have the INVENTOR OF ACID HOUSE, DJ Pierre flying in from Chicago, USA.

Call him Phuture, Pierre’s Pfantasy Club, Phortune, Phuture Phantasy Club, The Don, Photon Inc, Aly-Us, Nat “Ja…mmin Jones”, Scratching Pierre, DJ Pierre, The Creator, Legend, Pioneer, Innovative, Timeless, Genius…they all apply. And now the man himself is coming to rock our warehouse with a one-off Acid House set.

The event is going to take place at a great new warehouse location in east London and as we’ve proved with our previous parties, we create a gathering that feels as much like 1989 as possible, with projections from the era, decor and original artwork influenced by artists like Keith Haring and Bill Drummond, and of course lasers, smoke and Funktion One sound.

Support DJs announced soon.

M.A.N.D.Y vs Bookashade – Home (Tim Green Remix)

Posted in anthem, Deep House, Tech, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on December 13, 2011 by Montagano

‘Home’ by M.A.N.D.Y vs. Bookashade has been put through the remix mill and the results are explosive. Tim Green, Jona and Monaque have all added superb interpretations to it – but  my personal fave is the Tim Green mix.

London-based Tim Green has been an ever-present name in Tech / Deep House in recent years, but a string of impressive releases in 2011 has catapulted him to the upper echelons of the scene. Looking forward to what 2012 has in store…

Home Remixes Part 1. is out now. You can buy it here, or you can download his remix (192Kbps) from the SoundCloud player below.

Introducing: pplaceholderr

Posted in downtempo, New / Unsigned bands with tags , , , , , , , , on December 13, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

pplaceholderrIn this day and age it’s hard to retain an air of mystery. Most up-and-coming artists are clamouring for attention; desperate to be heard above the din of so much available music. Not so with the enigmatic pplaceholderr, who seems to be a bedroom producer somewhere in surburban America, who’s genuinely a bit shocked that people are liking his music on Facebook.

The thing is, his music is actually fucking beautiful. Standout track Don’t U Know has been remixed by Jacob Korn and found it’s way into Catz N Dogz record box and been played out live on Beatport’s Ustream as a result. Any fan of Catz N Dogz are well aware of their discerning music taste so it’s great they’ve introduced pplaceholderr to the right kind of audience, namely those who are likely to seek out new music as opposed to passively listening.

The music itself has a kind of Koreless, James Blake, Burial, type feel to it, but still something new and exciting enough to make you take notice. The type of music that someone would stick the word “future” in front of a genre just so they were able to describe it.

It’s testament to pplaceholderr’s talent that he confines himself to Soundcloud and Twitter, eschewing Facebook because he “feel[s] like that would be a bit self indulgent” and yet has been getting recognition and support without having played shows. Promoters reading this: BOOK HIM BEFORE ANYONE ELSE DOES.

pplaceholderr – Don’t U Know

Don’t U Know is due for release in early 2012 (hopefully Februrary, according to the man himself) on Space Hardware, a new side-label from UK-based label Hypercolour. It’ll be their first release, on both digital and vinyl. It’ll include the Jacob Korn remix plus another track, Brothers. Definitely one that’ll be worth the wait.

WATCH : Fatboy Slim, Riva Starr & Beardyman Get Naked!

Posted in Video, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , on December 13, 2011 by Knockturnal

PhotobucketSo I guess you must be here because you clicked a link inviting you to watch Fatboy Slim, Riva Starr & Beardyman Get Naked? Well I can tell you now that’s not gonna happen. What you will get however is three large burlesque ladies portaying the artists and a fun, bouncy, head nodder of a club track. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending what you’re into) they don’t Get Naked.

In describing his sound, Starr could be describing the video too:

“The Riva Starr sound has many different angles to it. It’s funny, sometimes it’s grotesque and sometimes it’s bouncy & dark; it really reflects my personality.”

Check it out below…

Riva Starr & Fatboy Slim featuring Beardyman – ‘Get Naked’ is available to download from 19th December, 2011.
