SOCIETY : FREE PARTY TOMORROW WITH ROBERT OWENS & ROCKY (X-PRESS 2)

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Chicago House, Italo Disco with tags , , , , , on February 22, 2012 by Knockturnal

After the huge success of the fourth SOCIETY warehouse party with DJ Pierre, we return to our basement with another Chi-town legend, Robert Owens, for another night of true House sounds – mostly old, some new; all incredible.

ROBERT OWENS is a man that needs no introduction, and the DSS basement is where Mr Owens comes into his own. It’s rare that Robert gets the chance to play in such intimate surroundings and it allows him to dig deep and play the stuff that really gets him jackin’ – and our parties often end up with the golden-voiced maestro singing to our lovely crowd. To say it’s special is an understatement.

ROCKY started DJing in the mid 80s, before being caught up in the whole acid house thing and getting carried along with the wave, landing a residency at London’s Yellow Book in 89 and getting matey with the Boys Own crew, making regular appearances at their events. Remixes for the likes of the Farm followed before Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle formed X-Press 2 and released the seminal ‘Muzik Express’. The team went on to land a 6 month residency at Cream in the nineties and score some massive singles including ‘Lazy’ with David Byrne that went to number 2 in the charts. Rocky came down to one of our nights at DSS and loved it – he asked about playing and…well…that’s a no-brainer – we’re honoured to say the least.

The SOCIETY residents CLASS OF 808 DJs will be bringing the heat as always, as will JOSH CAFFE, ALEX WALE, and guests, playing sounds from Detroit, Chicago, the UK and beyond + Don’t miss WANARB’S own HAZMAT playing an exclusive Italo set!

Our previous events have seen the Dalston basement transformed into east London’s take on Ron Hardy’s Muzic Box, with an untouchable atmosphere and party people jackin’ to the sounds of 80′s Chicago house ‘til the small hours. Nowhere else can you dance in a cosy basement club with Robert Owens singing and dancing along with you.

Society Sessions presents Terry Farley vs Robert Owens

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Club Night, Society with tags , , , , , on November 24, 2011 by 4th level zombie

After two successful Society Sessions in the past two months, we bring you a third installment that is our biggest session to date. The last two parties in Dalston’s Basement has seen the charismatic, soulful Robert Owens team up with a different guest DJ and this third assignment will see him square up to his toughest opponent to date! Terry Farley!

Terry Farley, a man who needs no introduction but i’ll try anyway, is an acid house legend from Slough. This is a man who used to bathe in a tin bath and has been through more musical movements than Beethoven. DJ, founder of Boy’s Own magazine and then head of Junior Boys Own Records, Terry Farley is a monumental catalyst in House music past, present and future.

Our last two events has seen Dalston Superstore transformed into east London’s take on Ron Hardy’s Muzic Box, with an untouchable atmosphere and the party people jackin’ to the sounds of 80′s Chicago house ‘til the small hours. Nowhere else can you dance in a cosy basement club with Robert Owens singing and dancing along with you. It may be a Thursday night but the weekend most definitely starts here – BRING DOWN THE WALLS!

Hard To Find

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Old School, remix/cover, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2011 by Knockturnal

Hard to find is a brand new double CD compilation released earlier this month containing exactly what it say’s on the box, hard to find classic and rare remixes  from old 12″ vinyl collections and CD singles. Claiming to take you back to a time when dance music was special and secret (much like our Society Parties) the album is a dream come true for DJs wanting to play something a little different. DJ historian and journalist extraordinaire Bill Brewster writes the sleeve notes…

‘With Hard To Find, we’ve sent our vinyl archaeologists to sift through the wreckage of acid house, throwing aside the Alison Limerick double packs and long-forgotten Shamen promos to bring you the gold (the only fool’s gold we’d permit would be by Stone Roses). But not only are these the very best of the remixes from the most creative period of house music, we like to think they define it, too. As if that weren’t sufficient, many of them have never been made available on CD before.’

Check out the mini mix below for an idea of what to expect, Hard to Find will be available both as a 2CD package and digital release. The full track list is after the jump.

Moody B – Vintage Sleaze EP

Posted in 8-Bit, 80's, Acid house, dj, House, New Music, remix/cover, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , on August 16, 2011 by 4th level zombie

For over 12 years now Moody B has been heavily involved with the dance music industry. From championing new sounds in dingy nightclubs in San Francisco, creating his own record label, remixing and producing or simply carving out a musical niche for himself. Moody B, real name Bill Mondjack, has pretty much done it all. Yet his enthusiasm and creativity show no signs of letting up as he releases his new EP – Titled Vintage Sleaze – on Council House Recordings.

The majority of his previous releases have been inspired by the old skool sound of Chicago House and Detroit Techno infused with Italo Pop and Disco. And now Moody B has unleashed this formidable knowledge of music on to a new 4 track EP. It has taken Moody B some time to find a suitable platform for his take on the late 80′s Chicago sound that he has been nurturing, that is until Council House Recordings stepped in.

SLACKK Interview + Top 5 ACID TRACKS

SLACKK is one of the new wave of DJ-producers influenced by the Acid House and breakbeat Hardcore sound. Now signed to Numbers, Slackk has found himself labelmates with the likes of Jamie xx, Jackmaster, Deadboy, Hudson Mohawke and Lory D and judging by the reaction to his first release ‘Theme From Slackk’, he’s going to be just as big very soon. We’ve seen first hand what Slackk can do to a dancefloor when he played at our warm-up party in July, so we know any tune he plays is guaranteed to leave you gasping for more, which is great because he’s playing at the next SOCIETY with Number head-honcho Jackmaster. WANARB caught up with SLACKK to ask him a few questions and get his top 5 acid tracks.
