WIFEY : 5 Tracks For SOCIETY + Interview

Wifey started in 2008 as one of a handful of club nights introducing bassline to London. Also known as bassline house, the scene is an offshoot of UK garage originally popular in the North and Midlands. They started to bring leading DJs to clubs and warehouse parties in east London, including TRCDJ QPalefaceDexplicit, Illmana,Wittyboy, Pantha, Virgo (Mr V) and Piddy Py.

As UK funky started emerging in and around London, Wifey embraced this exciting new sound, creating a unique style of house music influenced by grime and garage. Wifey began to book artists such as such as Crazy CousinzHardhouse Banton,FunkystepzDJ PetchyR1 Ryders, and Deep Teknologi.

This kind of forward thinking approach to music led us to booking them for the upcoming SOCIETY party on the 12th of August. We took some time to chat to Steve, Robin and Ralph. The trio that make up Wifey and they also gave us there top 5 tracks they would be playing on the night.

WAVY Special Party @ The Alibi

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Bass, Club Night, House, mix, Old School, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , on July 29, 2011 by 4th level zombie

Stuck with nothing to do this weekend? You really shouldn’t be if you are reading this and live in London. However, if you’re still clueless I can recommend that you head down to Dalston Dive bar – The Alibi – to hear a one-off special from club night WAVY!

Not heard of WAVY? It’s a very rare offshoot of Wifey, a DJ collective that has thrown some of London’s most intense nights of bassline, garage, funky and grime since 2008, hosting everyone from Slimzee to B15 Project to James Blake to Pantha and many, many more. WAVY is a whole other sound though. Best to put it in their own words, eh?

WAVY is essentially a night to embrace the totally unexpected journey of early boogie, through the synthesizer- and drum machine-heavy sound of the 80s, to the sweat-soaked walls of Detroit electro clubs in the mid-90s

Alongside WAVY residents S Shaw and RK will be three secret DJ’s, two of which will be from the excellent Numbers record label. Unfortunately I can’t reveal who they are but trust me you wont be disappointed. They will also be joined by MJE of old skool garage night ‘Days Like That‘ fame. This elaborate collection of DJ’s adds up to a musically intriguing night where you can expect rarely-played collections of boogie, electrofunk, freestyle, new jack swing, acid and super fast Detroit ‘jit’ electro!

To get you in the mood check out this boogie mix from WAVY resident S Shaw.

This tunage your kinda of thing? Well, you’ll get a chance to hear the Wifey crew playing at the next SOCIETY warehouse party on the 12th of August alongside legends like Trevor Fung, Colin Dale, Kenny Ken, Top Buzz and established acts like Jackmaster, Slackk and Rattus Rattus. Italo Anyone?

Posted in 80's, Italo Disco with tags , , , on July 24, 2011 by Montagano

It’s been a while since I posted some Italo (mainly because I’m lame and I hardly post these days), so here’s one of my fave disco tracks at the moment.

All the attention we’re currently giving to the acid house scene that emerged during late 80′s / early 90′s makes it easy for us to forget about these tunes, which were hugely popular in Europe around the same time (maybe just a little before).

I know very little about Piano Fantasia, except that they released a bunch of tunes around 1985 – this one being my favourite of the lot. Enjoy!

SOCIETY : THANK YOU

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Warehouse Party with tags , , , , , on April 12, 2011 by Knockturnal

Well, we’ve just about recovered from Saturday’s SOCIETY warehouse party…

A massive thanks to all the DJs and more importantly to everyone who came down and made it a party to remember – the atmosphere in that warehouse was AMAZING, and the mixture of people made it even better – from those that were there in ‘89 to those who’d never been to a rave before.

The name SOCIETY really couldn’t have been more apt – there were literally all walks of life in the Metal Works on Saturday, but it just worked, everyone gelled together perfectly to make one of the best crowds we’ve witnessed in a long time.

More pictures and video coming soon!

Could this year see a resurgence in the Acid sound? We do hope so! Track list and some classic Acid House goodness is after the jump.

Shark eats ice (apparently)

Posted in 80's, Dirt, disco, We are not a rock band with tags , on October 27, 2010 by Montagano

Ever wondered whether it was possible you could get Italo dirt? When I say dirt, I mean the type of music that makes you frown, do an upside-down smile, and have a little stomp? Probably not methinks. And even less so with early-80′s Italo, surely? Well, we have a little treat for you today kiddies, because here we have one such track. This is a very rare song with a very bizarre name – ‘Shark eats ice’. It was produced by Conrad Schnitzler – a lesser known producer who has made electronic music on and off for the past 30 years.

It doesn’t do anything apart from stomp hard from beginning to end, with abstract lyrics shouted in both English and German. I’ve been stomping around my bedroom to this for a month or two now – but so far haven’t had the courage to play it out. Will I ever?? Who knows.

Until I pluck up the courage – I’ll enjoy this little 80′s rarity within the confines of my bedroom.
