SOCIETY : FREE PARTY TOMORROW WITH ROBERT OWENS & ROCKY (X-PRESS 2)

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Chicago House, Italo Disco with tags , , , , , on February 22, 2012 by Knockturnal

After the huge success of the fourth SOCIETY warehouse party with DJ Pierre, we return to our basement with another Chi-town legend, Robert Owens, for another night of true House sounds – mostly old, some new; all incredible.

ROBERT OWENS is a man that needs no introduction, and the DSS basement is where Mr Owens comes into his own. It’s rare that Robert gets the chance to play in such intimate surroundings and it allows him to dig deep and play the stuff that really gets him jackin’ – and our parties often end up with the golden-voiced maestro singing to our lovely crowd. To say it’s special is an understatement.

ROCKY started DJing in the mid 80s, before being caught up in the whole acid house thing and getting carried along with the wave, landing a residency at London’s Yellow Book in 89 and getting matey with the Boys Own crew, making regular appearances at their events. Remixes for the likes of the Farm followed before Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle formed X-Press 2 and released the seminal ‘Muzik Express’. The team went on to land a 6 month residency at Cream in the nineties and score some massive singles including ‘Lazy’ with David Byrne that went to number 2 in the charts. Rocky came down to one of our nights at DSS and loved it – he asked about playing and…well…that’s a no-brainer – we’re honoured to say the least.

The SOCIETY residents CLASS OF 808 DJs will be bringing the heat as always, as will JOSH CAFFE, ALEX WALE, and guests, playing sounds from Detroit, Chicago, the UK and beyond + Don’t miss WANARB’S own HAZMAT playing an exclusive Italo set!

Our previous events have seen the Dalston basement transformed into east London’s take on Ron Hardy’s Muzic Box, with an untouchable atmosphere and party people jackin’ to the sounds of 80’s Chicago house ‘til the small hours. Nowhere else can you dance in a cosy basement club with Robert Owens singing and dancing along with you.

Italo Anyone?

Posted in 80's, Italo Disco with tags , , , on July 24, 2011 by Montagano

It’s been a while since I posted some Italo (mainly because I’m lame and I hardly post these days), so here’s one of my fave disco tracks at the moment.

All the attention we’re currently giving to the acid house scene that emerged during late 80’s / early 90’s makes it easy for us to forget about these tunes, which were hugely popular in Europe around the same time (maybe just a little before).

I know very little about Piano Fantasia, except that they released a bunch of tunes around 1985 – this one being my favourite of the lot. Enjoy!

Retro/Grade : New Video + Album Sampler

Posted in Italo Disco, New Music, Video, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on July 14, 2011 by Knockturnal

Retro/Grade the London based duo made up of producers/DJs Tom Neville and Serge Santiago, drop their new EP ‘Mind Fighter’ this coming Monday (18th July). Mind Fighter will be the first of three EPs to be released this year that together will make up their debut album, Motion.

Accompanying the EP is their new video, the first in a trilogy directed by Weirdcore (who is also responsible for the bands epic live visuals). A surreal all CGI promo which reminded me of the works of Escher, which then got me thinking about what kind of stuff Escher would be producing if he was alive today? Now that I would love to see! I digress? Anyway… It’s very cool, check it out below then have a listen to the album sampler. Track list is after the jump!

Alan1 Gomma Podcast win

Posted in Italo Disco, mix, Nu-Disco, Oldies with tags , , on January 17, 2011 by Montagano

All I can say is one big fat WOW to this mixtape by new Gomma signee Alan1. It totally rocks.

Hailing from Rome, Alan1 recently released his debut EP on Gomma and it’s gone down a storm – despite Gomma choosing a bit of a random day for the release (day after boxing day!?). He normally plays live with synths and other machines (something I’d love to see) – but here he’s made an exclusive mix for Gomma.

If you didn’t already know – Gomma RULES. It’s an amazing disco label run by Munk, who discovered the likes of WhoMadeWho and pretty much runs the nu-disco scene… Here’s their blog. We can’t live without it.

Below you will find one of the tracks off Alan1’s EP – if you want to hear more, you can do so right here,

I wanna be your lover

Made in 1981 by La Bionda, this is Italo Disco at its truly finest. Talk about ahead of their time – this actually sounds like something that could be made by an artist today! I can’t stop watching this performance too – the dude on the lefts’ acting/singing is pretty much the most amazing thing in the world ever. I wonder what the audience made of this back then?

When I posted Radiorama’s ‘Vampires’ here I threatened to start regularly posting 80’s Italo on the blog. That has so far yet to materialize, but I still want to – and work permitting, shall do. Watch this space (again).

La Bionda - I Wanna Be Your Lover

Thanks to Maxwinnipeg for bringing this (and many other) Italo beauties to my attention!
