Justin Martin – ‘Don’t Go / Ruff Stuff’

Posted in anthem, Deep House, Tech, We are not a rock band with tags , , on May 14, 2012 by Montagano

Justin Martin’s new album is out on Dirtybird at the end of May and it has been causing quite a stir amongst the online community. So far, 5 songs have been made available to the general public; Lezgo, Ghettos and Gardens, Hood Rich and most recently – Don’t Go and Ruff Stuff.

The latest release sees Justin showing off his badass sound design abilities and his knack for producing unique sounding house music. In terms of mood, both tracks differ significantly from each other; Don’t Go is an mellow track with layered bass and vocals that sound distinctly like Lykke Li and Ruff Stuff leans towards the darker side of the spectrum, and is laced with the kind of quirkiness that has brought fame to Dirtybird over the years.

What strikes me the most though, is how finely produced both of these tracks are. Not since Mr. Oizo’s ‘Lambs Anger‘ album have I been so stunned by a producers’ sound design abilities. Hats off to Mr Martin.

Don’t Go / Ruff Stuff is out now, and you and buy it here.

When WANARB Met: Fur Coat

Fur Coat

After breaking the news last January that the tune about cocaine and ketamine you were all so desperately after was by Venezuelan duo Fur Coat we thought it only fair to pin them down for an in-depth chat. And what better time to do so than just before they’re due back in the UK to play Return To The Future 4 for some bank holiday weekend madness. With big-hitters like Seth Troxler and Tale Of Us also on the bill, it’s truly time for Fur Coat to cement their growing reputation here in the UK…

Tickets Selling Fast For Eastern Electrics Festival!

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 17, 2012 by Knockturnal

Eastern Electrics is a name that’s been synonymous with the London party scene since its inception back in 2008. Known for bringing together forward thinking promoters and killer line ups with every party, they’ll be continuing that tradition this summer as they get ready to stage their first out door festival.

The one day, 17,000 capacity event will be held on Clapham Common on August 4th. The complete line up is still yet to be released but with names so far that include; Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler, Julio Bashmore, Joy Orbison, Maceo Plex, Nina Kraviz, Tensnake, Pan-Pot, Sebo K, Crazy P, Nick Curly & Miguell Campbell there’s already plenty to get excited about.

Tickets for this have been flying out the door (as I’m sure you’d expect) with all early bird tickets selling out in record time. You can however still get your hands on some of the £35 saver tickets before they go up to the standard price of £40. Check out the promo video below then head on over to the official site for more details.

Waifs and Strays Remix Sean Roman’s ‘Moan’

Posted in Deep House, New Music, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , on April 11, 2012 by Montagano

The latest track from Waifs and Strays was released yesterday (10th Apr) in the form of a remix of Sean Roman’s ‘Moan’. It’s part of the debut release from London-based label Feast Records, and also includes a tasty remix from MANIK. The full EP preview is below (the Waifs and Strays track is the 3rd song along). If you like it, you can buy it on Beatport here.

Sean RomanThe Moan EP

I was lucky enough to be on the same line-up as Waifs and Strays at Potty Mouth last Thurs, and they totally blew me away. Their DJ sets are very much like their productions; forward thinking. They tend not to replicate house sounds from the nineties, and they don’t lean too heavily on the melancholic style of deep house that is so popular right now. Instead they showcase intelligent, futuristic house music that’s filled with clean basslines, cheeky hooks and clear, crisp beats.

Below are a couple of their recent releases. We also interviewed them last week – have a read of that here.

Dusky – Flo Jam EP

Posted in Deep House, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , on April 11, 2012 by Montagano

Yikes – what a stonker of an EP this is! I was perusing through SoundCloud last week when I chanced upon it, and it’s been on repeat ever since. I’m not too sure when it’s out, but it’ll be released on Dogmatik at some point and I will most certainly be purchasing a copy.

Dusky are London based musicians Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman. Their influences are everything from classical and avant-garde electronica, to UK garage and underground house – and you can really hear those influences in this EP.

Opening track Flo Jam has a playful breakdown, yet kicks in with an off-key hook that packs some real attitude. The same applies for Every Day; a nice, clean breakdown drops into a cheeky, layered-bass garage-style stomper. Both Mystics and Numerical nod more towards the darker side of deep house, yet each carry influences of UK garage and contain enough energy to put Red Bull out of business.

This combination of deep house and UK garage is a sound that is becoming more and more present on the scene here in the UK, and we’ll be following it in great detail.

If you want to hear more, here’s a podcast they made for DJ Mag last month (track list after the jump below).

When WANARB Met: French Fries

French Fries plays London's dirtybird BBQ

This Saturday sees famed San Fran based record label dirtybird in town for the London leg of their Spring tour which sees them visiting city after city with a variety of artists from their stable. Our lucky lucky city has hit gold however as we’ve managed to blag the biggest line-up but a BBQ of Meatwagon no less.

Appearing will be core members of the dirtybird crew Claude Von Stroke, Justin Martin, J Phlip and Christian Martin under his new alias Leroy Peppers plus key acts like Eats Everything, Catz N Dogz, Breach and a whole load more. We caught up with one of the newest recruits, young Parisian whippersnapper French Fries who’s currently a name on a lot of lips thanks to the success of his ballroom hit Yo Vogue…

Coat of Arms mix

Posted in Club Night, House, mix, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 3, 2012 by Red Ben

It’s nearly the Easter Bank Holiday! And it looks like it’s gonna be a messy one here in London – there are loads of great parties going on over the four day weekend, such as the dirtybird showcase and the Ostgut Ton warehouse party. The one we’re most looking forward to though is an intimate party in a warehouse in deepest Hackney with our friends at Potty Mouth. On the bill are Coat of Arms, Waifs & StraysWiLDKATS, and our very own HazMat.  Tickets are nearly sold out and it looks set to be another stomper!

Coat of Arms have a unique DJ style, something a bit different to the deep house mania that’s gripped everyone for the last year or so. They’ve done a melodic, bumpin’ house mix for the party, you can listen and download it here:

Coat Of Arms - Promo Mix For Potty Mouth

To find out the venue address for the Beaster party this Thursday you’ll have to email Potty Mouth and ask them nicely, as it’s limited capacity and they’re keeping the venue pretty secret for this one.
