When WANARB Met: Claude VonStroke

Posted in Bass, Deep House, House, Interviews, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , on March 26, 2012 by Montagano

We had the honour of meeting legendary American house producer Barclay Crenshaw AKA ‘Claude VonStroke’ ahead of his appearance at Gist in Chelmsford, 5th April. The dirtybird label boss talked about his weakness for being a perfectionist, how dubstep taught him a thing or two, and also what track he’d play to distract zombies from eating his brains.

ImageSo far we’ve held our Society parties in an old scrap metal works, a car park, basements and warehouses but never outside! This summer will see us change that when we join forces with our friends at The Ran$om Note to host a stage at this years Farr Festival!

A bespoke 2000 capacity festival held in a deserted forest just outside London FARR has only been running for just two short years, but in that time has already become one of the “ssh, have you been to this festival?” festivals. R$N had the pleasure of playing there last year and it was quite the special evening.

Get ready for 15 hours of old and new house sounds from the likes of:

HANNAH HOLLAND (Paris Acid Ball)
TERRY FARLEY (Boys Own)
TREVOR FUNG (Balearic Sunset Set)
DAN BEAUMONT (Dalston Superstore)
SOCIETY DJs
+ many, many more to be announced soon!

Other stages this year include:

JUST JACK:
Eats Everything
Miguel Campbell
Jozif
Huxley
George Fitzgerald

SANCHO PANZA – massive line-up announcement coming soon!

This not going be one to be missed, all early birds have now sold out but FARR have given R$N a very limited number of specially priced £35 tickets exclusively for R$N/SOCIETY lovers which you can get right here.

INTRODUCING: DEBUKAS

Posted in After-party, Deep House, Gigs, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on March 14, 2012 by Red Ben

We’re hoping to see a lot more of the name Debukas this year. This young Glasweigan first stood out as a talented, interesting producer with his self-titled debut release on 2020 Vision last summer. The track ‘Pointers’ is an immediate attention-grabber that manages to combine hard and soft elements really well. It starts with quite a warm, fuzzy disco-house feel and gradually evolves a sharper, peak time feel before sliding back into a melody-driven groove.

DebukasPointers

The 3rd track on the EP, ‘Some Days’, is a darker, slower number, but still definitely tickles your stomp gland. The underlying synth line sounds kinda like Daft Punk’s ‘Da Funk’ meets Detroit techno.

DebukasSome Days

But proving exactly why this guy could and should be big, his recent remix of on Crazy P’s last EP, ‘Beatbox’, does exactly what a great remix should – outshines the original. A down tempo groove underpins a thoughtful and well-crafted disco soundscape, with some creative re-working of the original vocals. Definitely a nice after party tune to drop. Check it out HERE. And his latest collaboration with another 2020 artist, Simon Baker (following their last collaboration last summer, NO PRESSURE), is another step  towards him being a big name on the deep house scene.

His live sets are supposed to be pretty amazing as well, taking in heavy synth action, late night slo-mo discoid chuggers and the ghosts of techno past. Go check him out supporting Crazy P alongside Horse Meat Disco, it’ll be a belter.

WANARB Recommends: Ron Basejam

Posted in Slow-Mo Disco, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2012 by Red Ben

For me, Ron Basejam is the unsung hero of ‘slo mo’ (Slow Motion House). My ears first pricked up to him when he appeared on Hot Toddy’s shimmering 2010 slo mo monster (105 bpm), ‘I Need Love‘, but up until very recently I presumed he was just another charismatic but obscure, under-rated bedroom producer. I’d never seen him on any lineups at disco nights in London, or heard/seen any hype about him at all. It turns out that he is actually the inimitable and multi-talented James Baron – one of the two founders of Crazy Penis (who now go under the more ‘accessible’ name of Crazy P).

Now I don’t know why slo mo house pioneered by the likes of Mark E, The Revenge and Hot Toddy (who it turns out is actually the other founder of Crazy P, Chris Todd) is not a massive deal in east London (especially on the after party circuit), but hopefully drawing your attention to someone who has produced some fantastic slo mo, Ron Basejam, will help it along a bit.

M.A.N.D.Y vs Bookashade – Home (Tim Green Remix)

Posted in anthem, Deep House, Tech, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on December 13, 2011 by Montagano

‘Home’ by M.A.N.D.Y vs. Bookashade has been put through the remix mill and the results are explosive. Tim Green, Jona and Monaque have all added superb interpretations to it – but  my personal fave is the Tim Green mix.

London-based Tim Green has been an ever-present name in Tech / Deep House in recent years, but a string of impressive releases in 2011 has catapulted him to the upper echelons of the scene. Looking forward to what 2012 has in store…

Home Remixes Part 1. is out now. You can buy it here, or you can download his remix (192Kbps) from the SoundCloud player below.
