Too Many Mixtapes

Posted in Club Night, mix with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 11, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

KRL Tief MixWhat with it getting dark around 4:30pm and everyone saving their pennies for Christmas, there’s a definite feel of hibernation in the air. You can moan all you like about how boring that is, but actually we’re all benefiting hugely from that. It seems every dj/producer and their dog has locked themselves away with a crate full of exclusives and made sick free mixtapes for us to enjoy. Seriously, the amount of aaaaaamazing mixtapes and podcasts full of banging tunes floating about the blog-o-sphere sent to warm our hearts and ears, all thanks to the kindness of our favourite artists…. it’s bordering on ridiculous.

Okay, in reality it’s more like they’re keenly aware we’re all hibernating too and need new beats to power us through the horrible morning commute or pound along on the treadmill to, and are just buttering us up in time for the Christmas/New Years party season so that we’re desperate to see them play by then.

With *so* many good’uns to listen to, it’s getting hard to pick out what’s merely good and what’s abso-fucking-lutely amazing. However, this KRL mix for new deep-house night Tief at Corsica Studios will blow your mind. For those unaware, KRL is responsible for this utterly delicious remix of J Phlip’s Fever, and this mix is just as likely to make you break out in a huge grin each time it drops, only, with a mix this long, it’ll be many many times over.

Let’s get this straight. The Tief mix wasn’t named Resident Advisor’s mix of the day last week for no good reason. It is just *too good*. With tracks from Axel Boman, Tensnake, A1 Bassline and Huxley, plus a few choice KRL remixes; in turns havin’ it, in turns soulful; chances are you’ll revisit this mix more than a few times. Download link beneath the Soundcloud player, track listing is after the jump.

Dirtybird At Fabric: Claude Von Stroke + Justin Martin + Eats Everything

Posted in Bass, Club Night, House with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on November 2, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Dirtybird Claude Von StrokeWhatever your plans are for Saturday night you need to cancel them because they are paltry in comparison to what’s going down at Fabric. Claude Von Stroke has bagged himself Room 1 and has roped in Justin Martin and Bristol-boy Eats Everything to bring you a night of jaw-dropping basslines. Let’s be fair, there’s never a time you wouldn’t want to see Claude Von Stroke, and after hearing Justin Martin and Ardalan’s absolute stomper ‘Lezgo’ doing the rounds recently (watch the insane video); it’s difficult to think of a reason why you shouldn’t be dancing your arse off in Farringdon ’til silly-o-clock. And then we have the latest addition to the Dirtybird crew, Dan Pearce, aka Eats Everything, who I have never seen play a bad set. If you genuinely need more convincing then check out his Fabricmix and then get your ticket for the night and click ‘attending’ on the Facebook event.

Support Riot-Affected [PIAS]

Posted in We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , on August 15, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

[PIAS] logoWatching the communities across London and other riot-affected areas of the country pick themselves up in the wake of devastation has been truly inspiring. And what’s been really interesting is seeing social media play as large a role in that as the media claims it did in the criminal organisation that caused it all in the first place.

From the ad agency interns who set up a site to “Do Something Nice” for Malaysian student Asyraf Haziq, whose cruel mugging was videoed and plastered over YouTube, to the already bulging fund for Tottenham barber Aaron Biber who was facing closure due to looting and ravaging of his shop; victims have been given a human face by high-profile campaigns.

It was hard not to feel choked up watching both House Of Reeves in Croydon and the Sony DADC Warehouse in Enfield burn to the ground. Anyone with an ounce of compassion would have pause to think about how many lives are connected to these businesses and how their destruction would have long-term ramifications.

The loss of the Sony Warehouse in particular represents a huge blow for the independent music industry. The vast majority of readers to this blog will no doubt be aware of the impact it has has on [PIAS], a distributor for many many labels, including Warp, Rough Trade, XL amongst others, that stored a large quantity of their physical stock in the warehouse.

As [PIAS] themselves say “Labels and artists affected by the destruction of the Sony DADC warehouse are faced with incredible pressures on their businesses in respect to the re-manufacture, re-supply and marketing required as a result of the fire. Whilst it is expected that insurance will cover the lost stock, the reality for many labels is that they will not be compensated or insured for an interruption of trade or the additional capital to reproduce the stock that they have lost and the promotion in which they have invested.

With the streets now clean and the sun shining, it is all too easy to resume daily lives without a thought for the urgent need to support these labels. Please, take a moment to visit the [PIAS] site to donate to the fund they’ve set up with AIM and find out what else you can do to help.

Trouble Vision Summer Session Review

Posted in Club Night, House, Minimal with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 15, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

trouble vision sat 11 juneIt’s now my firm belief that there is no friendlier night in London than Trouble Vision. It’s so rare to go out and experience an evening where your drinks stay unspilled, your toes stay un-stomped and you don’t get barged past in the bogs. I chatted to people in the queue to get in, outside having cigarettes, at the bar and even inside the club bang next to the speaker. Literally everyone I spoke to was nice and welcoming and proper sound. The atmosphere the Trouble Vision crew create is something quite unique for London, and actually something special.

Combine this with their consistently good lineups and what you get is a loyal following of regular goers. Being a Trouble Vision virgin myself, I was totally unaware of this and, in all honesty, with it being at Corsica Studios, was expecting a pretty standard Elephant-And-Castle level of crazy attitude. So glad to be proved wrong.

The night is somewhat of a blur in all honesty. I know what I saw was really good, even if I can’t tell you exactly what tracks were played. What I can tell you about is that warm fuzzing feeling you get after a fantastic night out. What I can say is that it’s one of the best nights out I’ve had in a while. What I can do is recommend that you get down to Trouble Vision and find out for yourself how awesome it is.

If that glowing reference doesn’t satisfy you then I’d advise you to head over to Tensnake’s Official Website and signup to download his latest free mix. It’s really rather good. I’d also strongly suggest you give Lee Foss’ latest podcast a whirl.  He claims it was delivered to him by “B6 the Backwards Motion Robot” and mixed by a future version of himself at a Hot Natured Party on Saturn in the year 2082. There are so many standout tunes on this mix, from Luca C & Brigante feat Ali Love – Morals (Clockwork remix), to Slowhands – Belle Of The Ball and to the superb moment that Agoria’s remix of Inner City’s Big Fun kicks in; you can see why he’s said it was an extra-terrestrial “classics set from the early 2000’s”. Download it now for instant lushness.

Tiga Remixes The XX

Posted in disco, Festival, remix/cover, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on August 27, 2010 by Knockturnal

It would seem Tiga’s just as hyped about his return to London as we are, so much so that he’s decided to remix a song from one of his favourite London bands The XX and offer it as a free download! Here’s what he had to say of the track:

“There’s just something special about making out in London, your mouth bursting with toffee and emotion, that ugly ferris wheel thing looming in the distance…This remix is a love letter to British Romance, from the heart of a Canadian Revolutionary.”

Obviously he’s not a fan of the London Eye? But it’s nice to hear him being so excited about our great city, especially when I’ve been cursing it all day! (I got drenched this morning – is it really August?) Let’s hope the weather picks up for the long weekend! You can catch Tiga tonight at LED Festival where he’s hosting the Planet Turbo Arena, there are still a few tickets left, get them here.

Exclusive Bleep43 mix from Toby Frith

Posted in Club Night, mix, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 12, 2010 by ksimsek

Lately there’s been lots of talk of swans being slain. The Daily Mail (of course!) claims that these graceful, long necked, feathered creatures are apparently being eaten by immigrants who live in bushes and served up as curry!

However, we don’t particularly care for their xenophobic scare-mongering, and are in fact more interested in Toby Frith’s chosen method of taking out these Royal birds… oh yes, he does it old school he uses A SWORD. Toby is one of the people behind sick-ass techno night Bleep43, and as he’s also a history buff there’s no real surprise that he has opted for such a mighty weapon.

Tonight, Toby and the other Bleepers are welcoming living legend Derrick May to Corsica Studios for an epic SIX HOUR set! Also on the bill is Intergalactic Gary, one half of Cocadisco, who will present a three hour soundscape that traverses obscure Italian disco to minimal wave, techno and brutal Chicago acid.

Bleep43 is one of London’s smaller nights that packs a massive punch. Don’t believe me? Check out our exclusive mix!

Citadels are here.

Posted in New bands, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on January 22, 2010 by Montagano

Citadels are a London based band who conjour up a perfect blend of spacey-synth-indie-electro-pop (could I have just coined a new genre there? Hope not). Instant comparison? Think Flaming Lips for the 10′s.

Their arrival is just in time to ride the wave of electro-pop (god I hate genre names), a sound that is ever present at the moment and looks set to continue to flourish in 2010. But what stands Citadels up amongst the big boys is that their songs are bursting with anthemic choruses and catchy vocal hooks - showing signs of musical ability that is way beyond their years as a band.

They’re currently getting set to release their second single – an AMAZING tune called ‘The Chemical Song’, which is out on the legendary Pure Groove Records on March 1st (we heart Pure Groove). Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to share or even stream that! (Go check their myspace if you wanna hear it) Gutted. Fear not though, because their nice singer, Mr Stefan Ferguson, gave us a couple of other tunes to share so you guys can get a taster of what they’re all about.

Keep an eye on this lot- we’re gonna be seeing much more from them in the year(s?) to come.

Citadels - Golden Islands (not available for download at request of the band)
