Toky

Chances are, if you download a lot of deep house podcasts, you’ve already heard Toky. The Hot Since ’82 remix of his track About You is currently making itself known to all and sundry after appearing on Noir’s latest ‘Recommends’ podcast. No surprise there really as it’s due for release on Noir’s label on 30th January. There is another remix by hot tip Fur Coat but it’s the Hot Since ’82 version that’s the big draw here. Pushing what seems to be January’s sound, of deep, down-tempo melancholic house; the remix is the type of track you might miss first time round but then you hear it again and say oh hey what’s that? Then maybe you’ll hear it another time and this time it sticks in your mind. With haunting androgynous vocals coupled with a dirty and deep bassline; it’ll be a 4am killer on the dancefloor for when everyone’s ultra-smashed.

Toky – About You (Hot Since ’82 remix)

Toky’s certainly set for big things this year despite only getting into dance music production last January after a live session with fellow Italian Karm from Tale Of Us. To be on Noir’s label, remixed by two very upcoming acts *and* gained such attention in a year is staggering. And if that weren’t enough, he’s already formed an ace side-project called Superhero with Italian DJ and producer Leon. There’s only a preview available of their new track Drugs And Choices but it’s fucking ace so do check it out. Dry humour laces spoken word lyrics over a sparse beat creating a surprisingly addictive little number.

Superhero – Drugs And Choices (preview)

It’s actually the first track on Toky’s recent Purp & Soul podcast which is well worth a listen and a download. Definitely keep your ears out for more from this man.

Too Many Mixtapes

Posted in Club Night, mix with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 11, 2011 by pettingparty

KRL Tief MixWhat with it getting dark around 4:30pm and everyone saving their pennies for Christmas, there’s a definite feel of hibernation in the air. You can moan all you like about how boring that is, but actually we’re all benefiting hugely from that. It seems every dj/producer and their dog has locked themselves away with a crate full of exclusives and made sick free mixtapes for us to enjoy. Seriously, the amount of aaaaaamazing mixtapes and podcasts full of banging tunes floating about the blog-o-sphere sent to warm our hearts and ears, all thanks to the kindness of our favourite artists…. it’s bordering on ridiculous.

Okay, in reality it’s more like they’re keenly aware we’re all hibernating too and need new beats to power us through the horrible morning commute or pound along on the treadmill to, and are just buttering us up in time for the Christmas/New Years party season so that we’re desperate to see them play by then.

With *so* many good’uns to listen to, it’s getting hard to pick out what’s merely good and what’s abso-fucking-lutely amazing. However, this KRL mix for new deep-house night Tief at Corsica Studios will blow your mind. For those unaware, KRL is responsible for this utterly delicious remix of J Phlip’s Fever, and this mix is just as likely to make you break out in a huge grin each time it drops, only, with a mix this long, it’ll be many many times over.

Let’s get this straight. The Tief mix wasn’t named Resident Advisor’s mix of the day last week for no good reason. It is just *too good*. With tracks from Axel Boman, Tensnake, A1 Bassline and Huxley, plus a few choice KRL remixes; in turns havin’ it, in turns soulful; chances are you’ll revisit this mix more than a few times. Download link beneath the Soundcloud player, track listing is after the jump.

M A N I K plays Krankbrother party

Posted in mix, Parties, podcast with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 14, 2011 by pettingparty

M A N I K djingThis Saturday sees NYC DJ and producer M A N I K play at the final summer Krankbrother’s party alongside Nick Curly in London. It was meant to be a secret daytime terrace party with sunshine, pimms, bbq, dancing and sick tunes but alas there was a license-revoking-based-incident and they’ve had to find a new venue. What they’ve replaced it with sounds pretty good though, with a “beautiful massive warehouse space and a large outdoor courtyard….. DJs inside and outside.” MANIK’s sound covers everything from house to disco to electro to funk and so seems perfectly suited to laid-back daytime partying. Imagine hot girls in sunglasses swaying to sunflecked beats and you’ve basically stepped inside my expectations for the weekend. Tickets have also sold out now but they will have 100 on the door so rock up at 2pm if you want in. You will have to keep checking the event page to find out where to actually go though.

*UPDATE* The address has been revealed as: 77-81, Scrubs Lane, Kensal Green, London, NW10 6QW.  Make sure you’re there early enough to grab a ticket on the door!

If this all sounds like major hassle, please know that it’ll be *totally* worth it. Simply get your ears round this recent Autobrennt podcast by M A N I K. Opening with Tensnake’s remix of Little Dragon’s Ritual Union feels a bit obvious, but then, as the remix of Tigerskin – Unreal Thing kicks in, it’s just one of those moments where a smile breaks out of your face and you want to start dancing. This whole podcast is jammed full of amazing remixes, from the Life & Death remix of No Regular Play’s track looking, to Will Saul’s remix of Foreign Language by Flight Facilities to Tensnake’s superb (yep, him again) reinterpretation of Runaway – Stories. With M A N I K’s own tracks, Homework and even Black Strobe’s Italian Fireflies all making appearances; it just doesn’t let up. Seriously, download this mix and tell me you won’t be at least considering how to blag your way into this party/front of the ticket queue.

EXPLOITED Records Podcast 19: ADANA TWINS, DOCTOR DRU

Posted in House, mix, Slow-Mo Disco, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , on August 26, 2011 by Knockturnal

Summer 2011 in London has for the most part been a bit of a washout. As I sit here typing in my darkened room I can hear the drip, drip, drip of raindrops once again and a crack in the curtains reveal more grey skies. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a great summer. It just winds me up that we can’t seem to have more than a couple of days of sunshine before the rain clouds decide to rear their ugly heads again. Thank god we’ve got good music, music that even when the suns not shining outside, can still transport you (mentally) to sunnier climes. This new Exploited records podcast by Doctor Dru and Adana Twins does just that, with the slow-mo disco house vibes being perfect for this time of year. With the rest of the bank holiday weather not looking too bad, consider this mix a warm up to a weekend of fun times.

Trouble Vision Summer Session Review

Posted in Club Night, House, Minimal with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 15, 2011 by pettingparty

trouble vision sat 11 juneIt’s now my firm belief that there is no friendlier night in London than Trouble Vision. It’s so rare to go out and experience an evening where your drinks stay unspilled, your toes stay un-stomped and you don’t get barged past in the bogs. I chatted to people in the queue to get in, outside having cigarettes, at the bar and even inside the club bang next to the speaker. Literally everyone I spoke to was nice and welcoming and proper sound. The atmosphere the Trouble Vision crew create is something quite unique for London, and actually something special.

Combine this with their consistently good lineups and what you get is a loyal following of regular goers. Being a Trouble Vision virgin myself, I was totally unaware of this and, in all honesty, with it being at Corsica Studios, was expecting a pretty standard Elephant-And-Castle level of crazy attitude. So glad to be proved wrong.

The night is somewhat of a blur in all honesty. I know what I saw was really good, even if I can’t tell you exactly what tracks were played. What I can tell you about is that warm fuzzing feeling you get after a fantastic night out. What I can say is that it’s one of the best nights out I’ve had in a while. What I can do is recommend that you get down to Trouble Vision and find out for yourself how awesome it is.

If that glowing reference doesn’t satisfy you then I’d advise you to head over to Tensnake’s Official Website and signup to download his latest free mix. It’s really rather good. I’d also strongly suggest you give Lee Foss’ latest podcast a whirl.  He claims it was delivered to him by “B6 the Backwards Motion Robot” and mixed by a future version of himself at a Hot Natured Party on Saturn in the year 2082. There are so many standout tunes on this mix, from Luca C & Brigante feat Ali Love – Morals (Clockwork remix), to Slowhands – Belle Of The Ball and to the superb moment that Agoria’s remix of Inner City’s Big Fun kicks in; you can see why he’s said it was an extra-terrestrial “classics set from the early 2000’s”. Download it now for instant lushness.

Low End Theory Podcast – Episode VII

Posted in mix, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , on September 8, 2009 by HazMat

boom time

Our favourite little mole inside the Radio 1 headquarters has bought this little mix to our attention. It’s a pod-cast made by the The Gaslamp Killer and Mary Anne Hobbs. Most of it is mixed by The Gaslamp Killer, Mary Anne Hobbs mixed the last 15 or so minutes. It’s an enjoyable listen and in places has more waaaamps than your dad on Christmas Day after a plate of brussel sprouts.

The Gaslamp Killer is one crazy mofo and has really blown up recently. His music is fat, but his stage presence is just as legendary – a white guy with a huge afro and tons of energy going crazy. You could pass him the TV remote and he’d probably run around the room and bounce of the walls with excitement (come on man, it’s only Big Brother – you hate that show anyway! Relax). Just listening to his mix I can just picture him going bonkers on a set of decks. What a stark contrast to Mary-Anne! It seems weird that they could even be in the same room together…

Anyway, I digress. You can subscribe to this and other pod-casts here or download the mix below… I recommend you do both!
