Alpines and Maya Jane Coles cover Carly Simon

Posted in Cover, remix/cover with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 23, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Alpines and Maya Jane Coles - WhyCarly Simon isn’t one of those artists that you wouldn’t necessarily to admit to liking to but Why is an absolute ’80s classic. So it’s great that someone’s decided to remind of that fact. It’s just a bit of shame that this cover by Alpines and Maya Janes Coles kind of misses the mark somewhat. No matter though, because it gives us the opportunity to point out this isn’t the first time Miss Coles has got her mitts on Alpines beats, as she remixed their track Cocoon under her dubstep alias Nocturnal Sunshine way way back in July. And that *is* a blinder.

Pets Recordings LogoEarly next month sees the digital and vinyl release of the second part of Pets Recordings fantastic compilation Friends Will Carry You Home. With the first part featuring Coat of Arms, Death On The Balcony and label heads Catz N Dogz; one could wonder how this could be bettered. But, there’s a simple answer. By Martin Dawson remixed by Maceo freakin’ Plex, that’s how.

Pets Recordings – Friends Will Carry You Home

So not only have Greg and Voitek of Catz N Dogz released what will undoubtedly be this Autumn’s smash tune on their compilation, which is on part *two* of THREE, but they’ve made this awesome and utterly covet-able canvas bag to go with the compilation. Top work lads, top work.

Want to love them just that little bit more? Check out this totally rad video for Martin Dawson – Think About It feat NRG (Maceo Plex remix) then….

Friends Will Carry You Home is released on vinyl on 7th November 2011 with the digital release following a week later on the 14th. In the meantime Martin Dawson plays Potty Mouth Halloween alongside Danny Daze, Clive Henry and Jay Shepheard this Friday at Village Underground in Shoreditch. Word on the street is tickets will sell out today so make sure you buy one now! Hopefully your friends will carry you home from that, huh.

M A N I K plays Krankbrother party

Posted in mix, Parties, podcast with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 14, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

M A N I K djingThis Saturday sees NYC DJ and producer M A N I K play at the final summer Krankbrother’s party alongside Nick Curly in London. It was meant to be a secret daytime terrace party with sunshine, pimms, bbq, dancing and sick tunes but alas there was a license-revoking-based-incident and they’ve had to find a new venue. What they’ve replaced it with sounds pretty good though, with a “beautiful massive warehouse space and a large outdoor courtyard….. DJs inside and outside.” MANIK’s sound covers everything from house to disco to electro to funk and so seems perfectly suited to laid-back daytime partying. Imagine hot girls in sunglasses swaying to sunflecked beats and you’ve basically stepped inside my expectations for the weekend. Tickets have also sold out now but they will have 100 on the door so rock up at 2pm if you want in. You will have to keep checking the event page to find out where to actually go though.

*UPDATE* The address has been revealed as: 77-81, Scrubs Lane, Kensal Green, London, NW10 6QW.  Make sure you’re there early enough to grab a ticket on the door!

If this all sounds like major hassle, please know that it’ll be *totally* worth it. Simply get your ears round this recent Autobrennt podcast by M A N I K. Opening with Tensnake’s remix of Little Dragon’s Ritual Union feels a bit obvious, but then, as the remix of Tigerskin – Unreal Thing kicks in, it’s just one of those moments where a smile breaks out of your face and you want to start dancing. This whole podcast is jammed full of amazing remixes, from the Life & Death remix of No Regular Play’s track looking, to Will Saul’s remix of Foreign Language by Flight Facilities to Tensnake’s superb (yep, him again) reinterpretation of Runaway – Stories. With M A N I K’s own tracks, Homework and even Black Strobe’s Italian Fireflies all making appearances; it just doesn’t let up. Seriously, download this mix and tell me you won’t be at least considering how to blag your way into this party/front of the ticket queue.

Hard To Find

Posted in 80's, Acid house, Old School, remix/cover, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2011 by Knockturnal

Hard to find is a brand new double CD compilation released earlier this month containing exactly what it say’s on the box, hard to find classic and rare remixes  from old 12″ vinyl collections and CD singles. Claiming to take you back to a time when dance music was special and secret (much like our Society Parties) the album is a dream come true for DJs wanting to play something a little different. DJ historian and journalist extraordinaire Bill Brewster writes the sleeve notes…

‘With Hard To Find, we’ve sent our vinyl archaeologists to sift through the wreckage of acid house, throwing aside the Alison Limerick double packs and long-forgotten Shamen promos to bring you the gold (the only fool’s gold we’d permit would be by Stone Roses). But not only are these the very best of the remixes from the most creative period of house music, we like to think they define it, too. As if that weren’t sufficient, many of them have never been made available on CD before.’

Check out the mini mix below for an idea of what to expect, Hard to Find will be available both as a 2CD package and digital release. The full track list is after the jump.

Tanner Ross Remixes Catz N Dogz

Posted in House, remix/cover with tags , , , , , , on August 18, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Catz N Dogz Escape From Zoo remixesSo this little beaut popped up in my Twitter timeline today and although I’ve got a sneaking suspicion I’m a wee bit late on this, I thought fuckit, I’ll share it anyway. I went to see Polish duo Catz N Dogz last month at Select*Elect and they were brilliant. The whole night was bags of fun, from meeting them at their hotel room and getting chased down Shoreditch High Street by the hotel manager who was insisting that one of them, Voitek, could not just wander off with one of their dressing gowns (He wanted to DJ wearing it. To be honest, it was a pretty fierce look), to dancing my arse off to as much as their set as I could without getting shoved about, and even getting accidentally punched in the face by someone demonstrating how I should shove back. Yeah, it was the kind of night where even getting a fist in the eye feels like fun. Basically, if you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing them as you can be sure they’ll play tons of stuff from their record label Pets Recordings as well as their own stuff.

So Tanner Ross is a name that keeps popping up and I *need* to track down more of. But for now this remix of Catz N Dogz awesome tune ‘Long Way’ off the Escape From Zoo remixes on Mothership is quenching that craving (a bit). The original is pretty dope too so do check that.

Greco-Roman Label Mix For Trax Magazine

Posted in mix with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 20, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Greco Roman mix for Trax Mag AprilSo this gem of a mix by Joe Goddard & Full Nelson came out in April and I’ve been listening to it pretty regularly since. I’ve totally fallen in love with it; it’s very much a case of the more I listen, the more I like. So imagine my surprise when I check the SoundCloud page today and spy it’s only had a pitiful 230 or so plays and only 65 downloads. What’s up people?! From the Casetteboy opening to Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs downplaying it with beautiful track Critisize, to Four Tet’s luscious remix of Apple Bobbing by Joe Goddard to the inclusion of Golden Axe by the awesomely-named Mums Of Death, this is simply brilliant.

Drums Of Death is actually featured on this mix a few times, but it’s really his pairing with Mumdance that’s his standout moment here. In fact, despite this mix showcasing only a few acts from the Greco-Roman stable, it flows wonderfully and has some real headphones moments. Do this mix justice and download it now.

Black Holes

Black HolesBack in 2008, you know, the year Crookers were getting big? I heard of this duo called Black Holes from Chicago. They were freakin’ raw and amazing and I loved it all. But after they did a remix for Little Jinder in a remix contest, they just flat out disappeared. What a Sad moment indeed…

Well it’s nice to know they’re still alive and kicking as they’ve sent out their latest production. Enjoy the new with a little bit of old!

You know lately with all the Ducksauce love and what not going around, I’ve noticed lots of artists and producers warming up to this old disco sound, and you know what? I freakin LOVE IT!

Here are some of my HOT Disco picks for the week. The only way these tracks could get even hotter is maybe if I got Natalie Portman to dance for me as I played them out… MAYBE!

Uffie feat. Pharrel Williams - Add Suv (Armand Van Helden Vocal Remix)

Ziggy Stardust - Breaking Bones

Voodoo Chili - Check Out Our Groove (Herve Club Edit)

Spicy Stuffs!I was really looking forward to doing a followup to the Tribal post I did here a while back by maybe getting some exclusive stuff for you guys from DJs/Producers like Toyselectah, DJ Mouse, and DJ Custom – but of course they’re too busy to reply back right now!

In the mean time I’ve been busy trying to get some DJ gigs and playing at summer style parties these past weeks here in Texas. School is almost out (although I immediately go into summer school) so I’ll probably have more time to post random stuff like what I’m about to post!

These are some of the songs I’ve been playing at almost every party I’ve played at the past month – I hope you guys enjoy, most of them sound nothing alike (and in no way are these in any particular order)
