We heart italo disco

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on February 27, 2009 by Montagano

A chance encounter on Facey-B chat last night has prompted this 80’s themed post. The conversation ended up with me being given this AMAZING 1984 disco classic – I think I listened to it about ten times in a row until I knew all the words (and the air-bassline). It’s soooo good!! It was also pointed out to me that it’s the kind of music that you’d hear at an orgy. I didn’t enquire as to how they would know such a thing…

Escape from New York – Fire in my heart

In keeping with the disco theme, here’s a better known italo-disco track from the early 80’s. It’s been receiving plays by numerous DJ’s lately (Erol Alkan and James Murphy to name just two) and rightly so, it’s a true classic. I’m loving all these 80’s classics that are rearing their heads once again.

Charlie – Spacer Woman

Now that your appetite has been well and truly wetted(?), here’s another 80’s classic that’s been getting a caning recently…

Talking Heads – This must be the place (Naive Melody)

Last but not least, here’s a lovely chilled track from 1979. OK – so it’s not from the 80’s but it’s pretty close right? Let’s just say Sylvester must have been ahead of her time…

Sylvester – I need somebody to love tonight

Chrome Hoof – killer electro metal

Posted in bands with tags , on February 25, 2009 by goodlookingboy1

Hello guys and girls… This is my first post for We are not a rock band, cheers Matt for hooking this up! Anyway – I won’t babble on – check this lot out!!

Chrome Hoof are a 10+ piece, silver wearing, futuristic, psychedelic orchestra from London who incorporate a multitude of instruments including bassoon, violin, trumpet, guitar, keyboards, percussion and bass. Their music is a diverse sound of metal, funk, electro and disco.

The band have remixed, Simian Mobile Disco’s – ‘Clocks’, and Test Icicles – Circle, Square, Triangle to name a couple. Basically they are tremendous with a capital T.

I saw Chrome Hoof supporting Simian Mobile Disco at Koko in Camden, I had never heard of them before and did not know what to expect. I was completely blown away by their raw energy (not to mention the 30ft Robot taking over the whole stage). To sum them up, this band ROCK!

Here is one of my favourite tracks taken from their album ‘Pre-Emptive False Rapture’

Listen and turn up LOUD!!!!!!!!!

Chrome Hoof – Leave this ruined husk

Tiga – Love don’t dance here anymore.

Over the years, Tiga has always been pretty hit and miss for me. There’s no doubting that there is always a ridiculous amount of hype surrounding every release he does, and when he gets a tune right he is one of the few that are capable of making genre defining anthems. However (in my humblest of opinions), he has also made some pretty dodgy tunes!

When I first heard his latest single ‘Love don’t dance here anymore’, it instantly occurred to me that Tiga may have fallen foul of some serious ‘euro-cheese electro’ – like he did in places on his previous album. Instead, I’ve grown to really like this track. Yes, the lyrics are slightly cringeworthy at first but the song itself is great once it gets going. For me, it took a few listens until it all fell into place. But now I love it. Good work Tiga. I can’t wait for his new album to drop – Soulwax, James Murphy, Phillipe Zdar & Tiga all together on one album!?  Bring it on!

A Jack Beats mix AND a Foamo mix!? We spoil you.

Every now and then we get blown away by mixes. Most DJ’s churn out mixtape after mixtape, but most that I hear fail to capture the spirit of the moment. What I mean by that is people seem to conform to rigid ‘mixtape rules’ (I’m probably guilty of it myself) and forget to be ambitious, use distinctive music and apply it in a unique way. I couldn’t care less if there are a couple of clangers on there, as long as it peaks and troughs and continuously surprises me with great and fearless tune selection then it gets a thumbs up from me. Seems simple – right?

Now, I understand that music is totally subjective, and I never expect to hear a mix where I love EVERY tune. But mixes that stand out are those that are capable of making you enjoy tunes that you wouldn’t normally like. That’s the secret.

Bang Gang 12″s new recruits ZZZ show everyone how it’s done.

Imagine you’re in a club. It’s the end of the night and the DJ winds down his penultimate tune. Everyone is shouting to the DJ for one more. The DJ plays this;

ZZZ – Leonine

I’m not gonnna lie, I’d probably cry. This tune is pure fucking genius. It’s epic, well produced and well written.

ZZZ (not to be mistaken for zZz – some crazy Dutch electronica band) hail from Melbourne and with an introduction like this they look to be set for big things.

WhoMadeWho are coming to town!

I’m so stoked…. Yes WhoMadeWho, those crazy danes from Copenhagen are coming to London on the 5th March to play in Hoxton. The gig is to launch their latest single ‘The Plot’ which is out the following day. They then travel up to Manchester on the 6th and who knows when they will return to these shores!? I cannot wait for their new album to drop, I’ve heard snippets of it and it sounds fucking AMAZING. It’s called “The Plot” and will be out late march 2009 on Gomma records.

In the meantime – get a load of these. The first two are from the self entitled ‘WhoMadeWho’ album which was released in 2005. Their cover of Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction appeared as a bonus track on there too. They then released Satisfaction as a single and on the B-side there was a cover of Mr Oizo’s Flat Beat. Now, I’m undecided as to which I prefer. Benny Benassi’s tune got thrashed to death so it’s easy to be put off it, and Mr Oizo (the legend) has had a massive resurgence lately. As you can probably guess, I’m leaning towards Oizo. But hey, they’re both damn good covers.

WhoMadeWho – Space for rent

Benny Benassi – Satisfaction (WhoMadeWho cover)

Mr Oizo – Flat Beat (WhoMadeWho cover)

Finally, here’s the Hot chip remix of TV Friend, WhoMadeWho’s most recent single. After touring with them, Hot Chip liked it so much that they requested to remix it. These are the results:
