When WANARB Met: Jay Shepheard
Some people think New Years Eve is the best night of the year. But those people are probably wrong. Because the correct answer is actually Halloween. Party-goers make a massive effort with their costumes, and promoters with the nights they put on. Potty Mouth is no exception, having pulled out all the stops and laid on a monster line-up. Agaric: BOOM. Jay Shepheard: BOOM. Martin Dawson: BOOM. Clive Henry: BOOM. Danny Daze: DOUBLE-BOOM! They’ve also decided to have it on the Halloween Friday, meaning that you’re likely to start as you mean to go and carry on throughout the weekend in a heightened state of utter debauchery. To see if any of us will make it out alive we caught up with Jay Shepheard to give us the lowdown…
Hi Jay. Hope you’re doing well.
So as you’re playing at the Halloween Potty Mouth a lot of these questions are going to be Halloween-themed. What was the best Halloween costume you’ve ever had?
Potty Mouth is notoriously quite a messy night, as is Halloween. The two combined smells of danger. Do you have a safety word prepared in case things get a bit much?
I thrive on mess like a vampire thrives on the blood of virgins, so I’m not too concerned about it.
You’re known for playing House, Techno and Disco. What can revellers expect to have their ears full of?
A fine blend of the above, basically. Including some new killer collaborations I’ve been working on lately and some work in progress for my album too.
What’s your favourite horror film?
It’s gotta be The Shining, such a classic. I also loved Wolf Creek, it was the first and only time I’ve hidden behind a pillow during a film.
What made you decide to make the switch from music PR to making your own music?
I’ve always been making my own music as a hobby, and after some tracks got signed and released I decided I should give that a go full time – it was more of an evolutionary process than a conscious decision as such.
What’s the scariest place you’ve ever DJ’ed?
The Juno Records Christmas party 2006.
What tunes are you listening to the most at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of old stuff actually. A while ago I switched back to vinyl for DJing and have been going through some of my old vinyls that were stashed my my parents place. There’s loads of good US and French from between about ’99 and ’04 so I’m playing a lot of that at the moment, it fits nicely with today’s sound.
Who’s the next big thing you’ve got coming on your label Retrofit?
Got another collab from myself and Tad Wily coming up. It was a winning combination on Retrofit # 3 so I’m looking forward to that. There is also some stuff in the pipe from Manolo (aka Roberto Rodriguez) and of course more from yours truly.
There’s undoubtedly going to be a lot of zombies at Potty Mouth Disco. What would you do in the event of a genuine zombie apocalypse?
Join them, asafp.
The line up looks pretty spectacular. You’re sharing the bill with Martin Dawson, Clive Henry and Danny Daze. Are you particularly looking forward to seeing any of them? And who do you think would have the best costume?
Indeed it’s a great lineup and I’m looking forward to all of it. Martin and I are close buddies, we were neighbours while living in Berlin so I’m looking forward to hanging out with him. Costume wise Martin usually looks like he’s dressed for halloween anyway, so I reckon he’ll have it hands down, hahaha.
Thanks so much!
Make sure you get a ticket to this awesome night via Resident Advisor and start planning your costume now because it’s going to be EPIC. Head to Village Underground in Shoreditch on Friday 29th October for ghoulish Halloween funtimes from 9pm to 6am. For those of you who can party like the undead there is a secret after-party to launch Tropical Records that kicks off at 6am and goes on until 2pm! Eeek! You know that will be MESSY.
