Luca Lozano is one of Britain’s finer exports to the magical land of 24 hour parties and numerous temples to the house and techno Gods commonly known as Berlin! He’s the head honcho of Klasse Recordings and former member of Zombie Disco Squad. You might remember his first release “Berlinetta” on Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird Records. Fast forward to now and Luca’s debut album ‘Life In Black And White’ is gearing up for release later this year, adding to his discography of amazing and unique EP’s and remixes.

Luca kindly took a few moments out of his busy schedule to speak to WANARB  about his recent gig at Oonst, life in Berlin, Klasse Records and some hotly tipped summer tracks!

When WANARB Met: Zombie Disco Squad

Zombie Disco Squad chats to WANARB

“Zombie” seems to be the word on everyone’s lips this week, whether it’s the global news discussing the shocking events in Florida; or the music press discussing Nat Self aka Zombie Disco Squad’s latest album Brains. Released this Monday past on Made To Play; its coincidental timing certainly catches society obsessing madly over flesh-eaters.

Here at We Are Not A Rockband we like to keep things simple and have combined the two topics for you and taken advantage of the fact he’s playing at this weekend’s SOS Jubilee Sunday Warehouse party and had a chat with Zombie Disco Squad about that… and zombies. And brains. And his new album Brains. See, simple?

Voice Of Dru

Doctor Dru on Exploited Rec

Berlin based label Exploited Records have been slowly stock-piling disco edits for their ongoing series Black Jukebox, with Doctor Dru teaming up with the Adana Twins for Juicy Fruit on the first release and Dutch duo Homework having previously played with Midnight Star’s Midas Touch for their track 1986 on the second release.

Black Jukebox 03 sees Doctor Dru once again dipping his toes into disco. It’s no secret that here at We Are Not A Rockband we have a soft-spot for a bit of italo disco. And Q – Voice Of Q is a certainly one of the true classics of the era (despite not actually being Italian). So you can imagine our delight with this beefed up new version, aptly named Voice Of Dru. Whilst the original is the type of track you’d place early on in your set, this you could play out late to the delight of everyone dancing.

The second track from this latest Black Jukebox comes from Bukka & Molinari. Bonus points to those who can spot the sample straight away.
Black Jukebox 03 is out now on Exploited Records.

Wanarb Met Elon + Exclusive Mix

We caught up with New York based underground techno DJ, Elon, ahead of his set next weekend at London night Select*Elect. After he picked his Top Ten Tracks for us back in December we though now we be an ideal time to have a more in-depth chat. Not only did he show a rather frightening cannibalistic side(!) but he also revealed there’s hidden backwards messages in his music! Luckily, he’s not really that scary so we we quizzed him on New York nightlife and his collaboration with Maceo Plex. He also recorded the first hour of his set last weekend at Watergate in Berlin, full of techno treats and unreleased tracks which you can listen to exclusively on We Are Not A Rockband and download for FREE… What a dude!

Shir Khan’s 2011 Retrospective

Posted in House, mix with tags , , , , on January 6, 2012 by rachaelwilliams

Shir Khan

All over the internet regular people have been moaning about how much 2011 sucked and how 2012 is going to be amazingly epic. Whilst all this has been going on every DJ and producer has proclaimed what a brilliant year they’ve had and how it’s absolutely been one of the best years of their lives. And you know what, listening to Exploited Records head Shir Khan’s Best Of 2011 Mix, it’s stunning apparent that that it *has* been house music’s year. Every track is a killer and is the type that’s going to have you dancing round your kitchen remembering every great night you had raving with your pals, and every great moment that helped blot out all misery you experienced in between. From Noir & Haze to 2 Bears to Tensnake to Julio Bashmore to Maceo Plex; it’s all there and everything in between. Have a listen to all two and half hours of last year’s musical joy and make sure you get on the download. Tracklist after the jump.

VIDEO: Aquarius Heaven – Stop

Posted in Deep House, House, New Music, Video with tags , , , , , , , , on December 15, 2011 by rachaelwilliams

Aquarius HeavenBerlin-based Aquarius Heaven is no stranger to a sexy tune. After moving to Paris in 2005 and hooking up legendary French act dOP, the ex-reggae and dancehall singer broke into the world of dance. His last release Can’t Buy Love, on Wolf + Lamb, was the type of track you could get obsessed over. With a low-down groove and hilariously shocking sexual lyrics, it was one of this autumn’s biggest tracks, featuring on both Visionquest’s recent Fabric 61 Mix and Art Department’s Essential Mix.

Latest track Stop is accompanied with a very very sexy video. It’s a good tune but could definitely benefit from a filthy little remix or two to give it a bit of oomph.

Modeselektor – Monkeytown LP

Posted in New Albums, We are not a rock band with tags , , , , , , on September 30, 2011 by 4th level zombie

The long anticipated Monkeytown album from mental German duo – Modeselektor – has finally dropped today, If you don’t already have it, treat yourself on this blistering hot day. The bass laden tunes will make being bounced of the sweaty armpit’s of other folk, on the rush hour tube, seem almost tolerable.

Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have come along way since the dark days of the Berlin wall and sprawling urban jungle that East Berlin became after the fall in 1989.  Those were the early days when Modeselektor didn’t even exist as a group! Instead Gernot and Sebastian were touring from one grimey back alley club to another, building and enhancing their reputation until they eventually founded their live show and from there, Modeselektor was born.
